What changed between the two rolls is the light condition. The 160 was shot from 11am until 2pm, whereas the 400 from 2 to 4pm during winter time. Scanning Portra, or any other color negative film, and obtaining smooth results from a "dry" scan is really less a scanning issue and more of a processing one - thus the reason I emphasize results. Some issues to be aware of - and apologies if some of this you already know or it seems obvious: Using Portra 400, I wanted to retain a bit more saturation for this landscape scene so I average metered the foreground at 320 and shot just like that. The result was a bit less overexposure than I have done in the other images which also allowed the warm colors in the bright sky to come through.
